Crimes of Opportunity

Security Awareness

As you all know, Dominican University is a relatively safe and crime-free campus.  When a theft occurs, it is generally a crime of opportunity and is preventable by the victim.

We can all reduce our chance of becoming victims by being aware of our surroundings and by following the guidelines listed below.

LOCK YOUR DOOR WHEN YOU LEAVE.  Whether you are a student in the residence halls or a faculty/staff member in an office, remember to lock your door—even if you are only leaving for a short time.  Many theft victims report that they were only gone “a couple of minutes” when they returned to find valuables missing.

DON’T LEAVE VALUABLES UNATTENDED IN A PUBLIC PLACE.  If you leave your table in the library, dining hall, computer lab or other public area, take your valuables with you.  Many victims report the loss of expensive coats, purses, electronic equipment, etc. when stepping away from a table.

PROTECT PROPERTY IN YOUR CAR BY PLACING VALUABLES IN THE TRUNK.  You place yourself in a high-risk situation when someone can look inside your car and see property such as a cellular phone, laptop computer, leather coat, CD collection, or recently purchased gifts.

STUDENTS:  DON’T LEAVE KEYS OR KEYCARDS LYING AROUND UNATTENDED.  The residence halls can only be secure if the residents act responsibly.  A thief will have a much easier time removing valuable property if they can gain access unchallenged.  If you lose your keys or keycard, report it.  An electronic keycard can be deactivated immediately.

REPORT SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY.  Get Involved!  If you notice something that doesn’t seem right, contact Campus Safety and Security by dialing “0” from any campus phone or (708)524-5999 from any other phone.  In an emergency, call 911.
