Meet our new Dean!


Arvid C. Johnson, a tenured member of the Brennan School of Business faculty since 2001, has been appointed dean of the school effective July 1, 2008. He has taught both undergraduate and graduate business courses for Brennan.

Prior to joining Dominican, Dr. Johnson was a principal in a management consulting firm and worked with companies ranging from startups to multimillion dollar business units of Fortune 500 companies. He has more than 15 years of engineering, manufacturing and management experience with a number of businesses including Northrop Grumman Corporation, Microwave Laboratories and Varian Associates.

Dr. Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in physics and a master's degree in electrical engineering. He holds an MBA from the Kenan-Flagler Business School at the University of North Carolina and a PhD in management science from the Stuart School of Business at Illinois Institute of Technology. A recipient of numerous awards, grants and honors, Dr. Johnson has published extensively, presents frequently at conferences and symposiums, and holds several US and foreign patents.


 

We are pleased to announce our new Center for Global Peace through Commerce
and its founding director, Kathleen Houlihan.
 

The Center was established this year with a generous grant from the Elizabeth Morse Charitable Trust. The mission of the Center is to prepare globally conscious business leaders whose work can promote peace through relevant business solutions. Through a variety of programs and activities, the Center will help students and business professionals:

·         increase their understanding of the economic, social and political challenges to doing business around the world;

·         explore the ways in which social entrepreneurs can create change for global good; and

·         establish international partnerships to address global challenges.

Kathleen Houlihan comes to Dominican University from the State of Illinois Office of Trade and Investment where she was the Assistant Managing Director for Asia Pacific. She has previously served as Executive Director of the U.S. Committee for the UN Development Programme, Deputy Director of the Washington Program for the Council on Foreign Relations, and Legislative Assistant for the Office of Senate Minority Leader in the Illinois State Senate. Kathleen has also served as an election observer in a variety of countries, including Albania, Azerbai jan, Bosnia, Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine. She holds a master’s degree from the Monterey Institute of International Studies and a bachelor’s degree from Saint Mary’s College of Notre Dame.

Professor Wayne Koprowski’s Strategic Management Class participates in The Business Strategy Game (BSG).  This is an online world-wide competition with 3385 teams from 219 colleges/universities.

The Brennan School of Business announces the 2008-2009 William G. McGowan Scholar

David Campbell

David's academic record, his thoughtful essay and the strong letters of support from faculty, made him the top choice for this award. David has a Masters in Organic Chemistry from IIT and spent a few years working as a chemist.  A year ago he decided to make a career change into business.  He is pursuing his Masters in Accounting and has thrown himself into business and enjoys the challenges.

 

The William G. McGowan Scholar's Program has been established to recognize academic achievement, encourage leadership ability, reward excellence of character and promote the entrepreneurial spirit. This scholar’s program serves to continue the entrepreneurial and philanthropic spirit of William G. McGowan, the founder and Chairman of MCI Communications. The Brennan School of Business has been fortunate to receive this scholarship for the past eight years.

As the William G. McGowan Scholar, David will study full time in the fall and spring,  thanks to the funding provided by this scholarship.  Please congratulate David as you see him on campus.



Beginning in August, 2008, the Brennan School of Business will offer MBA courses at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.
 
With our business courses and our outstanding faculty at Alexian Brothers, a Dominican University MBA will be more accessible to those who live and work in the northwest suburbs.

2008 Ethics and Leadership Lecture

On October 14th Mary Schapiro, CEO of the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) gave the Brennan School of Business 2008 Ethics and Leadership Lecture.  The lecture, which was sponsored by J.P. Morgan, was presented to students, faculty, alumni and friends at the Chase Auditorium in Chicago.  A copy of Ms. Schapiro’s lecture, entitled “The Road Ahead in Regulation” can be found at here.
