Strategic planning is driven and shaped by environmental factors – those within the university and others in the marketplace. It does not happen in a vacuum. Aspirations in context determine university priorities, sometimes expanding or accelerating planning, sometimes slowing the pace.

The original Dominican University 10-year strategic plan, Launching Our Second Century, was conceived at a February 2001 visioning weekend, involving more than 100 trustees, faculty, staff, students and alumnae/i gathered to propose future directions for the university. The University Planning Committee has continued to revisit and prioritize the plan – most recently in 2008 – with Pathways to Distinction, a thorough update of the original plan establishing priorities for 2009-2013.

Peers

In spring 2008 the Planning Committee approved a new peer group for Dominican University. Factors such as enrollment, location, average test scores, endowment, tuition costs, and religious affiliation were examined to determine similarities. Because of the complexity of our university structure and the graduate level programs we offer, not all comparative variables are in alignment. These universities provide us with a group to use for benchmarking in many categories and allow us to study best practices at like institutions.

Aspirants

To be a premier university begins with shared mission and a strong sense of self-worth. It also requires establishing our position or reputation relative to other well-respected institutions. US News & World Report ranks Dominican in the top tier of Midwest master’s-level universities, so we look to the top of this class for indicators of where and how to achieve premier status.

The University Planning Committee has selected the following aspirant group of Midwest master’s universities:

Although we do not aspire to be just like these institutions, Dominican seeks to craft its own definition of premier, enhancing academic reputation in ways that preserve and promote the distinctive identity of the university.
