Campus safety is a shared responsibility. There are many things that you can do to make the campus community safer. No campus safety department can function effectively without the concerted assistance of the community it serves. If you are careful, your time at Dominican will be safer. Remember that, in most cases, criminals are as successful as you allow them to be. Don't give them a helping hand or become apathetic.

It Could happen to you!
 

Be aware of your surroundings, including people. Visualize exit routes from an event or location in case of an emergency. Know safe and direct routes to campus destinations.

Try not to walk alone after dark. If you do, try to utilize well-lit and populated routes on campus.

If you plan to work in a building after normal hours and are concerned about being alone, let the Campus Safety department know where you'll be & when you anticipate leaving.

Keep emergency numbers in cell phone or by your landline phone, including that of your RA, Campus Safety, and Health Services.

Trust your instincts, especially when you feel that something is “not right.”

Be aware of what you post on the internet, especially online social networks like Facebook and Instagram. You can never be sure of who is viewing your personal information or pictures; stalkers, employers, recruiters, or family.

Do not prop open campus building doors, especially residential buildings. Remove props and report the problem to your RA or Campus Safety.

If you notice another person in danger call 911.                      

Do not engage another person who has a weapon or involve yourself in a fight.

 


Resident Safety

Campus safety is a shared responsibility. There are many things that you can do to make the campus community safer. No campus safety department can function effectively without the concerted assistance of the community it serves. If you are careful, your time at Dominican will be safer. Remember that, in most cases, criminals are as successful as you allow them to be. Don't give them a helping hand or become apathetic.

On-Campus Residence Halls

Exterior doors are locked for your safety. Do not prop them open.

Do not leave notes on doors indicating you are gone.

Keep emergency numbers in cell phone or by your landline phone, including that of your RA, Public Safety, and Health Services.

Keep small articles of value in a drawer and out of sight. Engrave large articles of value such as stereos or TVs with a personal identifier. Take several pictures of small items of value. Make a record, and keep one copy at school and one copy at home.

Lock your door even if you will only be gone for a few minutes.

If your roommate is sleeping, lock the door if you are going out.

Maintenance staff should have identification. In most cases, maintenance staff will make arrangements with you prior to doing service work.

Report all repair needs promptly.

Contact Public Safety if you suspect someone is acting suspicious. Get a description!

Do not loan out your room key, ID, etc., as these items may be duplicated.

 


Drill Information

Active Shooter Drill Information

Be Prepared – watch the Run, Hide, Fight video by clicking HERE.  And another helpful video can be found here. https://youtu.be/pr45zr9IXcs

During the drill:

Faculty teaching class – Review the Run-Hide-Fight video prior to the drill.  This drill is to practice shelter-in-place -- one way to respond in an actual event.  Lock the door if you can.  Could you move tables/chairs to barricade?  Split up and hid from view of the door.  The goal is to not be a target.

Students in class- listen to faculty; share when message is received; cooperate and participate and faculty will direct you.

Students at large – identify options for where you are – would running or hiding be safer? Figure out both in the moment, and evaluate options; be aware of this possible issue. In Residence Halls, close and lock doors.

Staff/faculty in offices – practice what you would do to hide.

Public offices – Practice closing office and hiding; hide/lights/silence phones.

Not on campus – Tell folks in a real situation, they should stay away from campus.

Protecting Your Stuff

Locks don’t work unless you use them. Most thefts on campus occur in unlocked rooms. If you have a problem with your lock, report it immediately by making a Maintenance Request.

Keep your eyes peeled. If you see someone suspicious in your residence hall or office building, ask what he or she is doing or call Security.

Keep an eye on your laundry. Clothing can be removed during laundry cycles. If you use off-campus laundry facilities, don’t go alone or late at night.

Caution is key. Don’t leave your keys lying around. Don’t lend them to anyone. If your keys are taken, report the loss to your residence hall director at once. You can get new keys and have your locks changed for a fee.
